Ideas for Painting a Bedroom With Stars and Planets

For anyone who enjoys stargazing or studying astronomy, a stars and planets-inspired bedroom is sure to be a hit. While there are several ways to incorporate the theme into your room's decor, a painted design is probably the most versatile option. Create a painted stars and planets design in a variety of places in your bedroom, to opt for either a subtle look or a bold design that gives your room a quintessential outer space feel.
  1. Border

    • If you are looking for a subtle way to introduce a stars and planets theme to your bedroom, paint a celestial-inspired border. You can find star- and planet-shaped stencils that make creating a border along the top of your walls very easy. Alternate star and planet shapes along the walls, or use a single shape for two of the walls and the other shape for the remaining walls. For a shimmering border, use metallic acrylic paints to fill in your star and planet stencils so they glisten like the night sky.

    Accent Wall

    • For a bold take on a stars and planets theme, use the shapes to create a stunning accent wall for your bedroom. Choose a wall to highlight, and cover it with a base coat. A deep blue shade is an ideal option, but use paint with a metallic finish so the wall has a luminous sheen that draws the eye. Next, add star and planet shapes to the wall. Use large stencils and create a random pattern, or draw a scene of the constellations and planets freehand. Use metallic acrylic paints so the stars and planets have a sheen to them. If you are planning to place furniture like a bed against the accent wall, paint your design on the portion of wall that is visible above the top of the furniture.

    Ceiling Mural

    • To re-create the look of the night sky, try painting a stars and planets-inspired mural on your ceiling. This project is labor-intensive, so you may want to confine it to the area above your bed or the center of the room. Paint the entire ceiling in a rich blue metallic shade, and paint stars and planets on your ceiling with acrylic paints. You can use the patterns of the constellations as a guide or draw an original design freehand. For a fun touch, use glow-in-the-dark paints for the stars and some of the planets so they are illuminated after you turn of the lights like celestial bodies in a real night sky. If you’re not particularly artistic, hire a mural painter to create a custom celestial mural for your ceiling.

    Floors

    • Stencils are an ideal way to hide signs of wear and tear on an old hardwood floor. Using star and planet shapes adds a whimsical look that is a natural fit for a celestially themed room. Prepare your floors by sanding and washing them carefully. You can create a variety of patterns with stencils, but use painters’ tape to create guidelines on the floor so you know where to paint. Stencil a border of stars along the edge of the floor that culminates in a cluster of planets every few feet, or stencil a few stars and planets just in the corners of the room. Use porch and floor paint to fill in the stencils in various colors, but remember to apply a top coat to protect your celestial-inspired floors.
