Instructions

    • 1

Cover the floors and furniture with drop cloths. Place painter’s tape on outlets, trim work and any other area you wish to protect.

    • 2

Pick a color for the antiqued appearance on your walls. Since you are working with walls that are already painted, you should base the color on the existing color. Pick a color that is several shades darker than the base color. For instance, if your wall is painted beige, opt for brown as the color to work with; for ivory, choose gold and for gray, choose black.

    • 3

Mix one quart of paint with one gallon of faux glaze for every 400 sq. ft. you are painting. If you want the color to have a more transparent appearance, add more glaze. If you wish to have a deeper, denser appearance, add more paint. Repeat this step for every color you plan to use for your antiquing.

    • 4

Pour the mixture into a paint tray and roll a drywall texture roller in the mixture, ensuring that the entire surface of the roller is covered. For a color-washed antique appearance, use a soft rag for a soft finish or 3-inch paint brush for a textured finish.

    • 5

Roll the glaze mixture onto the wall with the textured roller in all directions if you are trying to achieve the speckled look, moving from left to right, up and down until you have reached the desired appearance. Rub the glaze mixture onto the walls with the soft rag or paint brush in circular motions until you have covered the entire wall.
