How to Find the Square Footage of a Wall in a Room

If you’re planning to paint a wall in your home or cover it in wallpaper, you’ll need to know how much of those materials to buy. This means you'll need to know the square footage of the wall you want to cover. When taking measurements, use a metal measuring tape or a yardstick to get the most accurate results.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and width of the wall. Round up to the nearest foot when recording measurements in preparation for a painting or wallpaper project to ensure that you'll buy enough materials to cover the needed space.

    • 2

Multiply the measurements together to obtain the overall square footage.

    • 3

Measure the height and width of each window and door on the wall, and multiply each set of measurements to obtain the square footage of each of those elements.

    • 4

Subtract the window and door totals from the overall square footage of the wall, unless you plan to paint them the same color as the wall. The resulting figure is the square footage of the space you’ll need to cover with paint or wallpaper.
