Good Background Colors for a Space-Themed Bedroom

A space-themed bedroom is ideal for a little boy or a little girl whose interests lie in astronomy, science or even just astronauts and spaceships. Choosing a background color is tricky, because space is usually thought of as being dark, or black, and this does not work well when painting. Dark colors make a room feel claustrophobic and smaller than it actually may be. There are ways to get around this and maintain the realism of a space theme.
  1. Dark Colors

    • When choosing the color, keep in mind how overpowering a dark color can be when enclosing an entire room. While the temptation may be to use black or dark blue, purple or gray for the walls, this may not translate into the desired effect. Instead, choose paler tones of the blue or a very light gray for the walls, and use dark accents such as darker trim, or dark curtains, lampshades or bedding.

    Ceiling

    • A good option when painting a space-themed room is to accent lighter walls with a very dark ceiling. Painting the ceiling black or deep blue can maximize the effect of gazing up into space, without closing in the space too much.

    Stickers, Stencils or Decals

    • In addition to the dark ceiling, highlight it with glow-in-the-dark stickers of moons, stars and planets. Or use stencils or decals on the ceiling to depict parts or all of the solar system. The background paint can offset such designs and create a spectacular effect.

    Wallpaper and Borders

    • Space-themed wallpaper borders printed with colorful planets, astronauts or rockets can also be used to liven up your background color choice. A solid blue or gray wall can jump to life if matched with the perfect border. Consider using a faux painting technique or textured wallpaper painted over with a pale gray to mimic the textures and craters of the moon's surface for a unique effect, while still keeping the room open and welcoming.
