Painting Kitchen Cabinets Pale Antique Yellow

Changing the color of your kitchen cabinets can transform the look and feel of the room. Instructions

    • 1

Remove any doors or drawers from your cabinetry using a screwdriver. Remove any drawer pulls, handles and hinges from the items and set aside.

    • 2

Wipe down your cabinet framework, doors and drawers with a diluted solution of mild soap and water using a nonabrasive sponge to lift dirt or grime. Allow the items to dry. Sand over each item to scuff the surface so the paint can adhere.

    • 3

Paint the inside surfaces of the doors and drawers and the thin side edges with a paintbrush. Paint the outer face of the drawers and doors, starting inside any recesses or panels first followed by painting the frame of the recess on the face.

    • 4

Tape off any areas where the cabinetry framework comes into contact with your walls, ceiling or floor with painter’s tape. Paint the outer framework along the top, sides or underside of the cabinets with a roller for wide areas or a paintbrush for narrow or small areas. Work in long, smooth strokes for a clean finish.

    • 5

Paint the middle stile (frame support between doors or drawers) working from top to bottom. Paint each of the stiles to the left or right of the middle in the same manner. Paint the horizontal top and bottom portions of the frame working the brush from side to side.

    • 6

Allow any of the cabinet portions to dry for at least an hour before applying a second coat using the same methods and order as used to apply the first coat. Allow the second coat to dry for four to six hours or overnight before reattaching doors and drawers and replacing hardware.
