Painting the Wall With Doily Stencil

Doilies are punched paper circles that are often used to line dishes. These doilies are sold in packages of 25, 50 or 100 pieces and with many designs. Some doilies are not round but oval or even rectangular, but the most common pieces are round. When you want to stencil doilies on a wall you need to remember that the paint you use over the doily pattern will be the wall color. The color you paint on the wall before stenciling will be the doily color.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint your wall using a roller in the doily color. Because most of the wall will be covered in a second wall color, the doily color does not need to reach the corners or trim. Paint only the areas where you will want the doily to show. Allow the paint to dry for eight hours.

Spray the back of a paper doily with stencil adhesive. This adhesive will allow you to remove the doily after applying the paint.

    • 3

Position the doily over the wall area you wish to paint. It is often a good idea to cut a slot in the middle of the doily and use the slot for painter's tape to make attaching the doily to the wall easier. Press the doily firmly to the wall using a wallpaper seam roller along all of the edges. Spray and attach all of your doilies to the wall.

Pounce or stipple wall colored paint over the lacy portions of the doily. This is a painting technique using a very stiff and almost dry brush. The brush pushes paint into the holes in the stencil without allowing too much paint to seep under the stencil. These brushes are sold in the stencil section of craft stores.

Roll the wall paint on the areas between stencils and where the wall area is open. Use an angled paintbrush to cut in around your trim and corners. Pull off the stencils before the paint is dry. Pull at a 45-degree angle using steady pressure. It is likely that some stencils will fall apart. Use a sharp knife and tweezers to remove the small bits.
