How to Paint the Underside of Particleboard Kitchen Cabinets

The technique used for painting the underside of particleboard kitchen cabinets is essentially the same technique used for painting the rest of the cabinets, only upside-down. There are a few extra steps you should take, however, to ensure the process goes smoothly and doesn't result in any unpleasant spills.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any foodstuffs or decorative items from underneath the cabinets.

    • 2

Lay down newspaper or plastic sheeting on the counter top beneath the cabinets and secure it in place with masking tape. This will prevent any drips from marring the surface of the counter.

    • 3

Sand the underside of the cabinets. Most particle board cabinets are veneered and will need a heavy sanding to remove or roughen the veneer enough to where paint and primer will stick properly.

    • 4

Apply a coat of primer to the bottom of the cabinets. Use long, firm strokes to keep the texture even and to ensure the primer bonds properly to the wood.

    • 5

Wait for the primer to dry and then apply the first coat of paint to the underside of the cabinet. You may have to contort yourself to be able to see the underside properly. Again, use long firm strokes to ensure uniform texture but do not try to achieve uniform coloring just yet. Subsequent coats may be applied for that purpose.

Wait for the first coat to dry and then add more coats as necessary until the surface is of uniform texture and color.
