Painting Techniques for an Orange Room for a Teen

Orange is a warm, bold color. It's often considered too stimulating for a bedroom as it has an energizing quality; however, combining it with a neutral color, such as a soft cream or a light peach, tones down the excitement. It also aids concentration, which is ideal for a teen who spends lots of time in her bedroom working on homework and school projects. Using faux painting techniques adds texture and interest to the room and prevents the overpowering effect created by solid orange walls.

Create a stripe effect by painting the walls in a complementary light base color, such as soft peach or cream, in a latex eggshell-finish paint. Allow the base coat to dry and harden for two to three days before applying the stripes. Measure the wall to ascertain a suitable width for the stripes, ensuring that you have an even number and are not left with a half stripe at the edge of the wall. Draw pencil lines to mark the stripes. Apply masking tape to the outside of these lines. Using an orange latex eggshell-finish paint, paint the areas inside the masking tape to create the stripes. Remove the tape while the paint is still wet.

Use a crackle paint effect to create an aged, worn look, which is suitable for shabby chic decor. Apply a base coat of latex paint in a light color, such as peach or yellow. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly. Use a paint brush to apply crackling glaze to the entire wall. Ensure you apply the glaze using brush strokes moving in the same direction, or you will lose the effect. Allow the paint to dry. Apply the top coat of orange paint in the opposite direction you painted the glaze. For example, use vertical strokes if you applied the glaze with horizontal strokes. You will see cracks appear as soon as you apply the top coat.

Transform the room into a luxurious space with a silk faux finish. Apply a base coat of semi-gloss paint in a light orange color. Allow paint to dry. In a suitable container, combine one part untinted faux technique glaze with one part orange-tinted metallic glaze and mix well. Use a roller to apply a strip of glaze the width of the roller to the wall, starting at the edge. Drag a paint brush down the glaze in a straight line, applying firm pressure to create a silk effect on the glaze. Remove excess glaze from the brush and continue until the glazed area is complete. Continue applying strips of glaze and creating a silk effect with the brush over the entire wall.
