How to Separate Large Interior Open Spaces with Paint Color

In many modern homes, open spaces proliferate. While there are advantages to these open-concept designs, some homeowners prefer a warmer, more divided feel. While you likely don’t want to invest in installing walls, you can create the look of a divided space with some paint tricks. In doing so, you can transform your potentially overwhelming open space into a more welcoming and cozy living area.

Instructions

Paint all unconnected walls a different hue. If you are, for example, looking to divide up your family room and kitchen, paint the walls that only rest in the family room one color and the ones that only rest in the kitchen another, painting the large wall the connects the two spaces a hue that complements both colors you selected.

Make a diagonal paint line to create an unexpected break. Instead of a straight vertical line dividing your room, put a line at an angle, making the line look more like a part of the design than a stark break between the rooms. To create this line, use a level and a straightedge to draw a line on your wall, place painter's tape on the line and paint on one side of this division, then the other.

Add decorative painting in some areas, if you are artistically inclined. Reflect the theme of each room by painting small murals in different spots around the space, defining each area. For example, if you are trying to divide a great room into a study and a family room, paint a faux bookshelf on the wall that your study section centers around and a large tree, representing family, in the corner of the wall that encompasses the family room section of the space.

Create color blocks to divide the space. Instead of painting the large wall connecting the space one hue, deck it out in color blocks. Using painter's tape, create blocks on your wall, painting some blocks the colors featured in one section of your room and the other blocks hues featured in the second. Connecting the spaces still allows each to serve as a distinct area within the open space.
