Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the walls by filling in any holes with plaster compound and a putty knife. Sand down the rough edges with sandpaper. Apply two coats of latex primer to the walls, allowing each coat to dry thoroughly before applying the next.

    • 2

Put a base coat on the walls in latex paint in the color of your choice using a paint roller and a paint tray. Apply two coats and allow each to dry thoroughly.

    • 3

Tape off diamonds on your walls using painter's tape. Tape off three diamonds down and six diamonds across the wall. This will give you three rows of six. Start with the top row of diamonds. Use a ruler and a construction square or protractor to ensure each angle of each diamond is the same. Tape each subsequent row directly under the previous one. The top of each diamond should start at the bottom point of the diamond above it.

    • 4

Select two latex paint colors that are different than the base coat color. Paint the diamonds according to their column from top to bottom. Paint the columns with alternating colors until each diamond is painted. For example, if you selected the colors purple and yellow, you would paint the first column of diamonds purple and the next yellow and keep alternating as you go along. Apply two coats of paint and allow them to dry thoroughly.

The thin lines that run through the diamond shapes complete the argyle pattern.

Tape off stripes using painter's tape by crossing through the diamonds you painted. The stripes should form diamonds of their own as they run through the center of each of the large painted diamonds. The stripes should be thin and taped off accordingly. This is what completes the argyle pattern.

    • 6

Paint the stripes using a medium flat brush and a latex paint in the color of your choice. Choose a color that strongly contrasts the other colors in the argyle pattern, so the stripes are bold and stand out. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly.
