Painting Glossy Metal Cabinet Knobs

An outdated kitchen or bathroom is expensive to replace, but repainting what you have lets you spruce up the space at a fraction of the cost. Rather than buying new cabinet knobs, treat them to a new coat of paint to add a completely new look. Glossy metal knobs can be painted to a new metallic shade or regular paint may be applied. Always paint in a room with good ventilation or take the project outdoors.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the knobs from the cabinet doors. Thoroughly wash each knob with soap and water, using steel wool when necessary to remove any stains or build up. Rinse each knob and let it dry.

    • 2

Use 150-grit sandpaper to roughen up the surface of the knobs. Sanding glossy metal will provide the surface with enough texture to grab onto the paint so that the paint adheres successfully. When you are finished sanding, use a tack cloth to wipe down the knobs and remove any dust created during sanding.

Stick the screw end of the knob into a piece of polystyrene foam, commonly referred to as Styrofoam. Spray the knobs with a metal primer. Hold the spray can about 12 inches from the knobs or as otherwise instructed by the manufacturer. Keep the can in constant movement as you spray to avoid dripping primer. Allow the primer to dry completely.

Spray the knobs with spray paint. If you want to keep a metallic look, use a metallic spray paint. A flat paint color will also stick to primer if you want the knob to look metallic. Hold the spray can about 12 inches from the knobs and keep the can in constant movement as you work.

Allow the knobs to dry per the paint manufacturer's instructions before you reattach them to the cabinets.
