Painting Ideas for a Feature Wall

The feature wall, sometimes called an accent wall, stands behind the main focal point of the room. In a bedroom, it is the wall behind the bed, and in a den it is the wall that surrounds the fireplace. Paint this wall in such a way so it contrasts the other walls in the room while complementing the feature piece against it.

Instructions

  1. Solid Contrast

    • 1

Cover the floor of the room with a drop cloth.

    • 2

Brush primer paint on all four walls of the room and let it dry completely.

    • 3

Paint three walls of your room a solid, neutral color.

    • 4

Apply a contrasting color to the feature wall with paint rollers and let it dry completely to create an accent wall.

    Sponged Look

    • 5

Prime and paint four walls of the room a solid color and let the paint dry.

    • 6

Dip a sponge into a contrasting color of paint.

    • 7

Dab the paint onto the feature wall to cover it with a sponged look. You should see both paint colors on the sponged wall for a dappled look.

    • 8

Let the sponged wall dry completely before removing the drop cloth and replacing furniture.

    Stencils

    • 9

Brush or roll primer paint on the four walls and let it dry.

    • 10

Paint all four walls the same color and let the paint dry.

    • 11

Attach stencils to the feature wall with painter's tape, which will not pull off paint when removed.

    • 12

Brush or roll a contrasting color of paint over the stencil.

    • 13

Remove the stencils from the wall, leaving behind the image painted on the feature wall in the contrasting color.
