Painting Over a Two-Toned Wall

Two-toned walls are popular color schemes for adding depth to a room, but they do not always suit every style or home decor. It is not difficult to paint over a two-toned wall, but you will have to take time in surface preparation to make sure the old colors do not show through your new paint finish. Painting tools such as brushes, rollers and painter’s tape are readily available at your local hardware store.

Prepare the wall by sanding down any glossy areas. Glossy sheens are made to repel moisture as well as surface marks, so you will have to break down that protective coating by sanding it. Rub the sandpaper back and forth across the wall until it no longer shines and all surface scratches and scuffs are removed.

Repair holes, dents or any other damaged areas of the wall with drywall spackle. Paint spreads faster and more evenly when it is applied to a smooth surface. Wipe away sanding or spackle dust with a damp cloth to keep it from getting into the paint. Wait for the wall to dry before continuing.

Prime the wall to cover the old two-toned colors and make the surface even. Primer also protects the surface from moisture and seals porous surfaces. Refer to the drying time recommended by the primer manufacturer.

Apply high quality paint to the wall using the roller and brushes. Rollers help you quickly cover large areas, while brushes make painting corners easier. Roll the paint onto the wall in an up and down motion, similar to the shape of a "W," working one section at a time. When the paint dries, check to see if you need another coat. Look for areas that have a transparent coating of paint or any spots you missed.
