Painting Rods on an Iron Bed Frame

Wire brush
220-grit sandpaper
Tack cloth
Bucket
Dishwashing soap
Drop cloth
Compound spray primer
Glossy spray paint

Instructions

  Move the bed outdoors where you will do the preparation and painting processes.

  Brush the rods of the iron bed frame with the wire brush to remove debris, dust and chipping paint.

  Sand the rods of the iron bed frame with the sandpaper to scuff the surfaces and make them uniformly rough. Wipe the rods of the iron bed frame with the tack cloth after sanding it carefully.

  Fill the bucket with warm water and add a small amount of dishwashing soap to the water. Wash the entire bed frame carefully with the soapy water. Rinse the soap away from the iron frame and allow it to dry completely.

  Place the iron bed frame onto the drop cloth to protect surrounding surfaces from overspray from the primer and paint.

  Shake the spray primer for two to three minutes to mix it completely. Holding the can at least 1 foot away from the bed frame, apply the primer evenly over the rods of the bed. Coat the iron rods completely with the spray primer and allow the primer to dry for at least one hour.

  Shake the glossy spray paint in a similar fashion. Apply the spray paint using the same technique, ensuring a complete and even application over the rods of the bed. Allow the spray paint to dry for about 24 hours and then apply a second coat. Allow the second coat to dry for at least 24 hours before moving the bed to use it.
