How to Make Textured Paint With Laundry Detergent

if you want learn basic texture painting techniques hands-on, or if you want to entertain the kids for part of a day creating posters or finger-painting, you could visit a hobby store or big-box retailer and pay a premium for craft-grade texture paint, or you can purchase a competitively priced gallon of white texture paint at any paint, hardware or home-improvement store. Rather than go to either expense, make your own cost-effective crafting texture paint with powder laundry detergent and a few other items from your pantry.

Clean, lidded storage container
Measuring cup
Powder laundry detergent
Cold water
Powder laundry starch
Food coloring
Texture particles (sand, salt, coffee grounds, crushed eggshell)
Whisk
Painting tools

Instructions

  Remove the lid from a lidded storage container. Measure and add 1 cup of powder laundry detergent to the container.

  Add 1/2 cup of cold water to the container.

  Measure 1/3 cup of powder laundry starch and add it to the container.

  Add 10 to 15 drops of food coloring in the shade of your choice to the mixture in the container.

  Measure 1 to 2 tbsp. of crushed eggshell, salt, sand or coffee grounds and add it to the container for texture.

  Combine the ingredients in the container using a whisk. Beat the mixture for three minutes to ensure the ingredients thoroughly combine.

  Use paint with brushes, sponges, fingers or any other painting tool you desire. Place the lid on the container and store unused paint for a later date.
