How to Paint Over Wall Glue

Removing wallpaper is a tedious, time-consuming job, and sometimes stubborn wall glue is left behind. While it is recommended that glue or paste be removed before painting, sometimes tough glue is impossible to lift without damaging the wall. If you face immovable wall glue, you can paint over it as long as you treat the wall surface before painting it. Take extra time prepping your wall for paint to avoid having uneven paint surfaces or peeling paint later.

Instructions

    • 1

Rub the wallpaper glue with a damp cloth vigorously to verify that you've removed as much glue as possible. Allow the spot to dry for 30 minutes before continuing.

    • 2

Sand the rough area using a sandpaper block. Slough off a light layer of the surface, and lightly blend the edges of the glue into the wall.

    • 3

Apply wall conditioner to the glued spot using a dry paintbrush. Allow the acrylic to dry for at least three hours before continuing.

    • 4

Paint on a coat of primer to the walls. Use smooth, even strokes to cover the entire wall or just the glued area if you're making a repair. Allow the primer to dry for one hour before proceeding.

    • 5

Cover the wall with one or two layers of interior paint. Use a paintbrush to make smooth, even stroke marks over the glue. Allow the first layer to dry completely before applying a second coat.
