Painting a Headboard Black

Painting a headboard black is a fairly easy task. Depending on what the current state of the headboard is, some sanding and paint stripping may be required, but the task should be moderately easy to complete. Black is a contemporary choice for a headboard and sets the tone for a modern styled bedroom. Splurge on crisp new white and silver linens in a bold geometric print for an additional fresh new look.

Instructions

Pour paint stripper onto a rag and apply it to the headboard. Wait for the old stain or paint to bubble up then remove it with clean rag. Paint stripper removes the existing color and returns the wood to its original finish; repeat the process until the wood has been restored to its original condition.

Sand the wood as needed; the amount of sanding required depends on the size and condition of the headboard. Metal or chrome headboards typically do not require sanding. Use sandpaper if only a minor amount of sanding is needed, such as with a newer piece of furniture. Use a sanding block for pieces that need more attention and use a professional sander for larger headboards that require more work.

Apply black paint or stain to a wooden headboard. Use spray paint on metal or chrome headboards as the aerosol will adhere better to the surface. Allow eight to 12 hours in between coats for a wood headboard. Let the spray paint dry for 10 to 12 hours between applications. Repeat the painting or spraying process until the desired color has been achieved.
