How to Dull the Sheen on a Semi-Gloss Painted Wall

Semi-gloss paint is often used in areas prone to spills and water damage, like bathrooms and kitchens. This makes it easier to clean the walls in these areas of your home but it also means you have shiny walls. Lightly sanding the semi-gloss paint in your home will reduce the sheen to a tolerable level. Sanding is also the only way to reduce the sheen besides repainting the wall.

Place the 360- to 600-grit sandpaper on the orbital sander and plug it in. The finer the sandpaper, the less of the sheen it will take off the surface. However, it’s better to take off less sheen and sand more than take off too much sheen and have to repaint.

Put the face mask over your mouth and nose to protect your lungs from the paint dust. Turn the sander on and press it into the semi-gloss painted wall. Move the sander in slow, circular motions over the entire wall until you’ve reduced the sheen to the level you desire.

Dampen a cloth and wipe down the walls to remove the sanded paint. Use a vacuum with a brush attachment to remove any remaining paint dust.
