Is Acrylic Paint Recommended for Porches?

When you are embarking on a painting project, choosing the proper type of paint is one of the most important aspects. A trip down the paint aisle at your local home improvement store can be stressful, especially when you look at all of the different types of paint. Acrylic paint is recommended for painting a porch for several reasons.
  1. Weather Resistant

    • Acrylic paint is weather resistant, which makes it an optimal choice for a porch area. You might think that an excessive amount of water would make paint bubble up and peel, but with acrylic paint, you don't have those worries. Make sure that you choose a type of acrylic paint that is meant for the type of material the porch is made of.

    Porch Materials

    • Acrylic paint is appropriate for all sorts of different kinds of porches. If you are painting a wooden deck or porch, choose a type of acrylic paint made for use on wood. Other types of acrylic paints are also available for concrete if your porch has a concrete slab floor that you would like to paint.

    Preparing the Porch

    • Preparing the porch before you paint it can help the paint to last longer. Seal any cracks or spaces in the porch's wood by using an acrylic caulk. Wooden porches also benefit from an acrylic primer before painting. Acrylic primers are also available for concrete porches. Properly priming the porch before you paint it will help make sure that the paint will not peel and will make the paint job last longer.

    Warning

    • As with any other type of painted surface, the paint will eventually peel. Although acrylic paint is best for a porch, it will become damaged, crack and flake off after a time. When you see your acrylic paint beginning to peel, scrape the paint away and apply another layer.
