Decide which wall will be the main focal point of the room. Choose a wall facing the entrance to the room or one with a unique feature, such as a fireplace or large mirror.
Paint that wall either the darkest or the lightest shade of paint so that it stands out.
Moving counterclockwise throughout the room, paint each corresponding wall a different shade within the same color family. For example, paint the wall next to the focal wall a slightly lighter — or darker, depending on your original color choice — shade. The wall next to that one will have an even lighter or darker variation, and so on.
Continue until the entire room has been painted.
