How to Shade Wall Coloring for Effect

Choosing a color scheme is the first step when decorating. After you have the main color scheme chosen, based on your furniture and carpeting colors, you have to decide which shades of those colors to put on the walls. Rather than going with just one wall color for an entire room, choose several shades of the same color for a unique effect.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide which wall will be the main focal point of the room. Choose a wall facing the entrance to the room or one with a unique feature, such as a fireplace or large mirror.

    • 2

Paint that wall either the darkest or the lightest shade of paint so that it stands out.

    • 3

Moving counterclockwise throughout the room, paint each corresponding wall a different shade within the same color family. For example, paint the wall next to the focal wall a slightly lighter — or darker, depending on your original color choice — shade. The wall next to that one will have an even lighter or darker variation, and so on.

    • 4

Continue until the entire room has been painted.
