Painting a Living Room With an Orange Couch Navy Blue

Orange is often paired with navy blue in clothing, fabric, artwork and home accessories, as they are complementary colors. The cool and calmness of the navy can subdue the intensity of the orange. When you're using an orange couch in a navy blue room, the key is to tie both colors together so that it all looks purposeful and modern. You also need to introduce neutral colors. There are several ways to pair orange and navy in a way that will give you a space that intrigues but doesn't overwhelm.

Instructions

    • 1

Add throw pillows with navy or navy and orange in the pattern. This will tie the walls and the couch together. When you're selecting the throw pillows, choose those with only a little orange in the pattern. The orange in the couch is dramatic enough -- you don't need to add to it. The pillows could also have additional colors that go with orange, such as green or yellow.

    • 2

Place additional furnishings in the room. Avoid navy blue or orange upholstery for your armchairs. Instead, purchase chairs with a beige, tan or brown fabric. A neutral color like beige will subdue the navy and orange. Use the same kind of pillows for these chairs that you selected for the sofa.

    • 3

Position large ferns in one or two corners. Green is a good accent color for orange, and it breaks up the saturation of navy blue and orange.

    • 4

Add an accent wall to break up the darkness of the navy blue. A bamboo or grass cloth wallpaper can give the wall interest and texture. Although these wall coverings tend to be neutral, you can find some with a navy or orange hue. Avoid placing the the couch along the accent wall. Place your couch elsewhere, such as in front of the fireplace.

    • 5

Put light-wood tables in the room. Rich or dark cherry colors are dark, and you already have enough intensity in the room. A light color will bring in the additional neutral shades that the room needs.

    • 6

Hang sheer beige or off-white curtains if the accent wall has either color. If not, find a sheer fabric that is included in the accent wall. A sheer curtain will allow light in the room and distract from the intensity of the wall color.

    • 7

Hang pictures, using a frame color that is in the accent wall. Avoid black and other dark color.
