How to Paint a Room in Art Deco

Art Deco style is a design aesthetic popularized in the 1920s and 1930s. Known by its distinctive looks rooted in genres such as Cubism and avant-garde artwork, Art Deco decor focuses on clean geometric lines and bold hues. If you are trying to re-create this Jazz Age style in your room, there are specific colors of paint along with artistic techniques that provide an Art Deco feel. Create an angular shaped pattern or design on your walls with stencils or painter's tape, and add a punch of bright deco colors in yellows, turquoise or ruby red.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the room for your new Art Deco paint scheme. Remove all furniture from the room. Cover the floor with a drop cloth. Wash the walls with warm soapy water, and thoroughly dry them if needed. Mask off any areas that you don't want to paint with the painter's tape. This may include door frames, trim work or the ceiling-wall joint.

    • 2

Choose an Art Deco-inspired color palette. Select a neutral beige-yellow shade as a simple backdrop for bold, highly stylized furniture, or go with bright shades of red or turquoise. Opt for an accent color in a shimmering metallic, such as gold or bronze, for a look that mimics Art Deco wallpapers.

Pour a base color of paint into a clean tray. Depending on your Art Deco preference, this can be a lighter neutral shade that you accent with a bold hue or a more vibrant choice. Cut in along the wall joints and around trim with the nylon brush. Dip the brush into the paint, wiping off any excess, and paint a line around these border areas. Fill in the remainder of the wall space using the paint roller. Allow the paint at least two to four hours to dry, and re-coat.

    • 4

Create a geometric pattern mural on an accent wall, or fill the space with linear-type zig-zags and angular stripes. Position and attach the shaped stencils to the wall with painter's tape, or make your own pattern using the tape as a guide. For example, create a linear pattern by masking off the bottom or base coat of paint with long lines of tape.

Paint in your pattern with at least one accent color. For multi-shaped geometric patterns that are more like murals, use three or four colors, such as burgundy-red, gold and black. Allow the paint to dry for approximately two to four hours, and recoat.
