What Color to Paint a Bedroom if There Is Not Much Light?

When selecting colors for rooms with low light, it's vital that you go with shades that don't make the room look even darker. Rooms with small windows or basements don't get much natural light. Too much darkness can create a closed-in effect and make the room look smaller. Instead choose colors that create a soft, yet decorative feel in the room.
  1. Pastel Purple, Pink or Baby Blue

    • Feature pastel colors in the room such as baby blue, pastel purple or pink. These light colors create an open feel that blends with themes for both children and adults. Pastel pink and purple work especially well for small children, but some adults might also like a lavender-theme room with light purple walls. Choose baby blue if this room is for a little boy or guests. Light blue is a calm color that will also create a more serene environment in the room.

    Pastel Green with White Accents

    • Pastel green shades with white accents can create a serene feel in a room with little light. Paint the walls pastel green and include plenty of white accents in the room such as on crown molding and with other decorations such as white vases, bedding, lacy curtains and white wooden picture frames. Pastel green works well with several themes such as floral, ocean or artsy rooms.

    Neutral Shades

    • Neutral colors can also work well in a room with little light. Colors such as tan, beige, coral and other earth tones blend well with basic or modern themes. Choose neutral colors if this room is for a guest or yourself. It's easy to decorate a neutral room because the colors blend well with white, black, cherry or other types of furniture. White lacy curtains complement a neutral-toned wall. Leave the ceiling white when painting with neutral colors.

    Bright Colors

    • Bright colors can add a more sunny look within a dark room, as long as some light is getting into to the room to reflect colors. Choose bright shades such as orange, bright yellow or lime green, if you want something that really stands out. These colors work with all sorts of themes for kids and adults. A citrus-themed room might include lime green or bright yellow on the walls. Bright colors also complement a kid's circus or cartoon theme room. These colors will make the room look less dark and more cheerful.
