Painting a Metal Fireplace Surround

While fireplaces are the centerpiece of most rooms, if you have one, the fireplace surround might not be so hot. Older homes often have shiny or unappealing fireplace surrounds that can ruin the look of your décor. In order to make the unsightly surround look more appealing, you can paint it. Luckily, many spray paint companies offer high heat spray paint that can withstand the temperatures the metal surround is exposed to regularly.

Instructions

    • 1

Unscrew the metal surround from the fireplace and take it outside.

    • 2

Rinse any soot from the metal surround and dry it off with a cloth. Place newspaper over the glass doors and tape them in place.

    • 3

Lay the surround onto the tarp. Spray the primer onto the metal surround. Allow the primer to dry.

    • 4

Shake the high heat spray paint. Spray the paint onto the surround in short, even coats. Apply two to three light coats of the paint to the surround. Allow the paint to dry.
