How to Make a Super Glossy Tabletop

If you have small children, you know how furniture can quickly become damaged by frequent use. Children cause spills, stains and dents on tabletops that can be difficult to remove later. One solution is to apply a super glossy layer of protection over the top that will take a beating without harming the actual table. You can apply a super glossy layer onto the tabletop using a few basic hardware supplies.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Place a dropcloth beneath the table to protect the floor from accidental paint spills.

    • 2

Fill a paint tray with clear, glossy, waterproof latex paint.

    • 3

Dip the paintbrush into the paint and spread it over the top of the table with smooth, horizontal strokes. Cover the entire tabletop with a thin layer of paint. Allow the paint to dry for eight hours.

    • 4

Apply a second layer of glossy paint and allow the paint to dry for another eight hours.

    • 5

Fill a second paint tray with clear, high-gloss latex varnish. Don't shake the varnish before pouring, as tiny air bubbles may transfer onto the tabletop and make the sheen uneven.

    • 6

Dip another paintbrush into the varnish and spread it over the top of the table with horizontal strokes. The varnish may go on milky white but will dry clear. Allow the varnish layer to dry for four hours.

    • 7

Apply a second layer of varnish and allow to dry for at least four hours before using the table.
