How to Paint a Wall With a Red Lacquer

Lacquer paints are exceedingly high gloss, oil-based paints that create a vivid surface wherever you apply them. Although these paints are typically applied to furniture to create bright accents in a room, you can paint a wall with a red lacquer paint to make a room explode with color and style. Prepare the wall surface carefully to ensure that the shiny wall is ready for all the attention that the red lacquer will bring.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure 1/4-cup TSP into the bucket, and then add 2 gallons of warm water. Saturate the scrub brush in the TSP solution. Wash the wall thoroughly. Rinse the wall with plain water, and dry it with an absorbent towel.

    • 2

Sand the wall with the sandpaper to prepare it for the primer layer. Vacuum the wall surface with the brush attachment of the vacuum cleaner to remove sawdust. Wipe the wall well with the tack cloth to remove any residual dust.

    • 3

Apply painter’s tape around the perimeter of the wall to prevent paint from spreading onto surrounding surfaces as you apply it.

    • 4

Spread the drop cloth beneath the wall to catch paint spills.

    • 5

Apply a coat of acrylic primer to the wall, using the trim brush to cut in the perimeter and then the paint roller to apply primer on the surface of the wall. Allow the primer to dry for the time recommended on the product label -- usually about one to two hours.

    • 6

Sand the primer with the sandpaper to scuff the surface lightly. Wipe the wall with the tack cloth to remove dust.

    • 7

Load the trim brush with the red lacquer paint, and cut in the perimeter carefully. Pour the red lacquer paint into the paint tray and load the paint roller. Apply the paint carefully onto the wall in an even layer. Allow the paint to dry for the time recommended on the product label -- generally as long as 16 to 24 hours.

    • 8

Apply a second coat of lacquer paint over the dried first layer using the same application technique. Allow the second coat to dry for the same time recommended on the label.

    • 9

      Remove the painter’s tape.

    • 10

Clean the red lacquer paint from painting brushes and equipment using mineral spirits.
