How to Repair Splotchy Spray Paint on a Cabinet

While spray paint is more convenient than normal paint since it’s quicker to apply, it can also leave your furniture a splotchy mess if you don’t spray it properly. In order to fix a bad spray paint job, you’ll have to repaint the cabinet with another coat. Using primer also helps the spray paint set better and gives it a more even finish.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Set the cabinet outside on a tarp. Put on a face mask. If you can't move the cabinet outside, open as many windows as you can in your home and position the tarp around the cabinet. Tape the tarp up around the wall behind the cabinet and above the cabinet to avoid a spray paint mess. Lay another tarp on the floor around the base of the cabinet as well. Make sure the both tarps are spread out about two to three feet in all directions from the cabinet.

    • 2

Attach sandpaper to a sander. Sand the cabinet down with the sander, moving in the direction of the wood's grain, to remove any old finish or paint. Sand the cabinet until the surface is smooth and dull.

    • 3

Vacuum up any sawdust from the cabinet and the floor. Dampen a cloth and wipe down the cabinet to remove any remaining dust. Allow the cabinet to dry.

    • 4

Spray primer over the cabinet with short, even strokes until the piece is coated. Allow the primer to dry for two to three hours.

    • 5

Spray over the primer with the spray paint color. Press lightly on the nozzle to release the paint. Hold the can about eight to 10 inches from the cabinet while you spray. Spray back and forth in a horizontal motion, and stop when you get to the end of the cabinet.

Apply two to three light coats of the spray paint to the cabinet instead of one thick coat. This will prevent the paint from running or splotching.
