How to Paint Over Painted Furniture Without Sanding

When painting a piece of furniture that already has a paint job, many people sand the furniture down first. This is to ensure that the paint adheres to the surface of the furniture. However, as long as you have the appropriate varnish there's no need to sand down the furniture. By not sanding the furniture you save time and effort during the painting process.

Instructions

    • 1

Dip your brush into a can of primer. Make sure that you purchase a non-dry primer. The label on the can should read, "bonding" or "will adhere to glossy surfaces." Without sanding you'll need an extra-strong primer.

    • 2

Apply a coat of primer to the surface of the furniture you intend to paint. Use light brush strokes, almost dabbing the furniture with the primer. There should be many streaks in the finished coat of primer.

    • 3

Allow the primer to dry and clean your brush.

    • 4

Dip the brush in your paint, dab it on a cloth or rag to catch the excess, then apply a layer of paint to the furniture surface.

    • 5

Allow the paint to dry and add another coat. Repeat until you have the desired layers of paint.
