How to Add Sparkles to a Wall

Sparkle adds personalization and pizzazz to an ordinary room color. When natural or artificial light hits a sparkle-covered wall, the room begins shining, giving it a magical feel. Achieving a sparkly room requires little effort. To make your room sparkle, use specialty paint or items from the local craft store, such as glitter or faux gems. Choose a sparkle wall treatment for your bedroom, living room or a child’s bedroom.

Instructions

  1. Glitter Paint

    • 1

Paint your walls a solid color coordinating with your room’s decor. If necessary, apply a second coat completely covering the walls. Let the paint dry overnight.

    • 2

Stirring a glitter topcoat paint ensures the glitter does not settle on the bottom.

    • 3

Pour the topcoat into a paint tray.

    • 4

Apply the topcoat on your walls using a paint roller. Use a thin layer for a light sparkle. Use a thicker layer of topcoat for more sparkle.

    • 5

      Let the paint dry overnight.

    Homemade Glitter Topcoat

    • 6

Paint your walls using your choice of flat wall paint. Let the paint dry for four to six hours.

    • 7

Empty 3 gallons craft glue into a 5-gallon bucket. Add glitter to the bucket. Use between 1 to 4 cups depending on how much sparkle you want. Use glitter from the craft store. Choose one color or multicolored, depending on the desired look.

    • 8

Stir the glue and glitter together using a paint stirrer.

    • 9

Pour the glue into a paint tray. Apply it to the walls using a paint roller. Keep the layer thin and even. Let the wall dry overnight.

    Faux Gems

    • 10

Draw a grid on your wall using chalk and a ruler. The grid shape and size depends on the pattern and number of gems you want. For example, make a grid of 12-inch squares or a grid of 6-inch diamond shapes.

    • 11

Apply hot glue to the back of faux gems. Use a single color or multiple colors, depending on personal choice.

    • 12

Press the glued gems to the wall along the grid. Place one gem at each corner where the grid lines intersect.

    • 13

Wet a sponge with water and wring out the excess so that it is damp, but not soaked. Wipe the chalk grid lines with the sponge to remove them.
