How to Paint a Bath Vanity Using a Crackle Finish

Anyone who can paint can create a crackle finish for a bathroom vanity. The shabby chic look of crackle finish gives an antique or old-fashioned appearance. When applied to a bath vanity, even if the piece is brand-new, it gives the aura of age. Crackle finish is not a very durable option for decorating. If the vanity is used often, another faux finish may be preferable. Always start with a freshly stripped vanity, with all previous finishes removed.

Instructions

    • 1

Tape off areas of the vanity that are not to be crackle finished. Put masking tape along the edge of these areas to prevent paint from touching them. It is recommended that you not finish the top of the vanity, as the crackle finish is not durable enough to stand up to getting wet and having daily bath items repeatedly placed on it.

    • 2

Apply a coat of latex paint, using a roller. Cover the selected areas with the darker of the two colors you chose. Roll on the paint as smoothly as possible for even coverage. Allow the paint to dry for at least eight hours.

    • 3

Apply a layer of crackle finish to the vanity. Crackle finish is available at paint supply and crafting outlets. Use a paintbrush to cover the previously painted area with the crackle. Allow the layer to dry for approximately 30 minutes.

Paint a lighter color of paint over the crackle finish layer, using a brush. Use a generous amount of paint on the brush, and create long lines on the vanity. The paint will immediately begin to crack. Allow 12 hours for the project to dry.

    • 5

Remove any masking tape used on the vanity.
