Paint Idea for a High Bedroom Ceiling

High ceilings can be a dramatic element in a bedroom. Paint can accentuate the height of the ceiling for strong visual impact, or it can warm up the room by appearing to bring the ceiling down lower. Color choice, sheen and texture on a high ceiling can give the room a whole new look. Tray ceilings provide an opportunity to use more than one paint color for a strong effect, and special finishes enhance high ceilings and help set the mood of the bedroom.
  1. Painting High Bedroom Ceilings

    • Painting any bedroom ceiling can be intimidating, and painting a high ceiling in a bedroom can be especially challenging. If possible, paint the entire ceiling in one session to avoid visible lap marks. To get the best results, start painting the corner that is farthest from the door using a trim brush at the point where the ceiling meets the wall. Most high ceilings are so high that putting an extension on the handle of the roller will not be adequate, and a ladder is necessary. If the wall color and ceiling color are different, paint a strip of wall color around the edges of the ceiling to hide imperfections.

    Color Choices

    • The color white can make a high ceiling in a bedroom look even more distant, which may not be desirable. Another idea is to use a color that is the same color as the walls, but a couple of shades darker. This can give the room a more harmonious look and add a feeling of coziness. High ceilings can also accommodate dark colors for a dramatic look, like a cocoa shade with a soft eggshell sheen. When choosing a paint color for a high ceiling, make sure the wall and ceiling color complement the colors of your bedroom furniture, rugs and accessories.

    Specialty Finishes

    • High ceilings in a bedroom present the ideal area for dramatic specialty finishes. Glazes that provide a metallic or pearlescent effect are impressive on a high ceiling. Specialty plasters, like Venetian plaster finishes, add texture and dimension as well as color. While some of these finishes are complicated to apply and require the services of a professional, others are easy enough for a do-it-yourself-er.

    Design Elements

    • To make the high ceiling a focal point of the bedroom, artwork in the form of a mural will accomplish the task. The subject matter of the mural can be anything from a blue sky with white clouds to an eye-catching “trompe l’oeil” design. Detailed baroque, Victorian or art deco detailing can be painted onto a high ceiling, especially one with a tray design.
