How to Paint an Interior PVC Windowsill

PVC is a type of plastic that’s used to make a number of products, including windowsills. Windowsills made of PVC resist rotting and other problems associated with wooden windowsills, but they aren’t as easily painted. In order for paint to stick to PVC, you need a specially formulated paint for plastics. While some specially designed paints for plastic don’t require any prep work or priming in order for the paint to stick, doing the prep work doesn’t hurt the paint either.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Sand the PVC windowsill lightly with the sandpaper to make the surface slightly rough to the touch.

    • 2

Vacuum up any plastic dust from the sandpaper. Wipe down the windowsill with a damp cloth to remove any leftover dust as well.

    • 3

Apply primer to the PVC interior windowsill with a paintbrush. Cover the whole sill with the primer. Let the primer dry for at least 24 hours.

    • 4

Paint the PVC windowsill with paint formulated for plastic using the paintbrush. Allow the paint to dry for at least 24 hours before you touch it.

    • 5

Avoid rubbing or scraping the windowsill for seven to 10 days after painting to allow it to set properly.
