How to Paint Over Venetian Walls

Venetian walls are finished with Venetian plaster, a colored wall finish that leaves a texture behind. If the plaster is coated with a shellac or varnish, you’ll have to sand it away before you can paint over it. Once the shiny surface of the plaster is gone, paint will adhere to the surface of Venetian walls without a problem. Painting over Venetian plaster is easier than stripping it off, plus it gives your walls an interesting dimension.

Instructions

    • 1

Sand the Venetian wall in a circular pattern until the surface is dull and any sheen is gone. The wall will be slightly rough to the touch.

    • 2

Vacuum up any dust from wall with the brush attachment. Vacuum the wall as well as the floor.

    • 3

Set a drop cloth below the wall to prevent drips of paint from getting on your floor.

    • 4

Apply the primer to the Venetian wall with a paint roller. Allow the primer to dry for at least 24 hours.

    • 5

Paint the Venetian wall with the plaster paint. Use the paint roller to paint the wall in 4-foot squares. Paint over to the adjacent squares before the square you’re painting dries to avoid paint lines.
