How to Make a Blackboard Wall

When you are putting together a classroom, you may have a tight budget that you need to stretch to buy all of the necessary supplies. If your room does not already have a wall-sized blackboard, buying a new blackboard can eat up most of your money. One inexpensive alternative is to paint one wall in the room with blackboard paint to turn the wall into a usable blackboard.

Instructions

    • 1

Sand the wall that you want to transform into a blackboard using fine-grain sandpaper. Use circular hand motions over the entire wall to smooth down any unevenness, jagged edges or debris.

    • 2

Vacuum away any debris and dust left behind from sanding with a shop vacuum. Then wipe down the wall using a damp washcloth. Allow the wall to air dry for 30 minutes.

    • 3

Fill the bottom of a paint tray with blackboard paint, then coat the end of a 2-inch wide, flat paintbrush with the paint.

    • 4

Paint the outline of a square or rectangle in the desired size using blackboard paint. Cover wall to wall and floor to ceiling if you want to make the entire wall a blackboard.

    • 5

Coat a paint roller in the blackboard paint, then apply the paint in an even layer over the outlined space or entire wall that you are transforming into a blackboard. Allow the first layer of paint to air dry for 12 hours.

    • 6

Apply two more layers of blackboard paint as before, allowing the paint to air dry for 12 hours between each layer.
