How to Paint a Ceiling a Darker Color for High Walls

Darker and intense colors absorb more light. By darkening the room in this way, they can give the impression of making a room somewhat smaller. For a room with very high ceilings, this could be an asset, however. Typically, darker ceiling colors should be avoided, because they draw attention to the ceiling and away from your finely selected furnishings or decor. Pick the color carefully. If it's too dark or clashes with the decor, you won't be happy.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay out the drop cloths. Cover all furniture and floors.

    • 2

Tape the top of the wall at the ceiling joint. Cover the entire perimeter at the ceiling joint to protect the wall.

    • 3

Remove light shades and tape around ceiling fixtures.

    • 4

Cut in with the brush. Take advantage of the angle to reach into the edge and corner joints. Don't worry about full coverage. With a dark color, you'll probably require a second coat. Paint an even coat. Don't apply the paint too heavily.

    • 5

Roll the rest of the ceiling. Use the roller spatter guard. It cups around the roller and keeps paint from spraying about the room. This is quite important when painting ceilings. If you are comfortable with it, and should the ceiling not be excessively high, try a roller extension pole instead of standing on a ladder. The pole allows you to roll while you are standing on the floor.

    • 6

      Allow the paint to dry.

    • 7

Examine your coverage. Use very good light. If there isn't sufficient daylight, bring in a bright lamp and look at it carefully. Paint a second coat if you find uncovered spots.
