Laminate Bathroom Cabinet Paint Ideas

A misconception about laminate bathroom cabinets is that you have to replace them when you want a new look. Instead, spend a fraction of the money to get a fresh look by repainting them. Because of their slick surface, you need to take apart, sand, clean and prime the cabinets before you paint.
  1. Magnetic Paint

    • Paint the front of your cabinets with magnetic paint so you can easily hang reminders, notes and photos in your bathroom. The more coats you add, the more magnetic the cabinet’s surface becomes. In 2011, magnetic paint is only available in a limited variety of colors such as gray, black and white. However, there are also magnetic paint varieties that act like primers so you can place a coat of paint over the magnetic paint. This painting method works well for laminate cabinets, particularly if you do not want to sand down all the cabinetry. Instead, simply sand the face of the cabinet doors, apply the primer and magnetic paint to the sanded area.

    Chalkboard or Dry Erase Paint

    • If you constantly find that all your best ideas come to you while in the bathroom, consider painting your laminate cabinets with chalkboard or dry erase paint. Like magnetic paint, these paints only come in limited colors, so you may wish to use them just on your cabinet fronts. Chalkboard paint, which comes in black or green, is good if you are artistic and want to change the artwork on your cabinets. These paints are good for laminate bathroom cabinets if you do not have the desire to paint the entire cabinet system or you do not want to sand down the cabinetry.

    Antique Look

    • If your bathroom décor is rustic or shabby chic, consider giving your laminate bathroom cabinets an antique or distressed look by using a crackled paint finish. Following the directions, apply a coat of an accent color that you want to appear between the cracks. After the paint dries, apply a coat of crackle paint over the cabinets, which will form cracks as it dries. This paint works well on laminate cabinets particularly if you do not have much experience painting laminate furniture because it helps hide flaws that would normally be visible. Because most bathrooms have a color scheme that has at least two colors, crackle paint also gives you a chance to use both colors of paint in a manner that is tasteful and simple to apply.

    Stencils

    • If you want to paint a scene or pattern on your cabinets, but do not want to draw the image by hand, consider using stencils. In addition to stencils that come in the shape of objects, like flowers, you can also find them in geometric shapes that allow you to create a painted mosaic. Before applying a stencil, paint the cabinet and allow it to dry. Place the stencil on your cabinet, using painter’s tape to keep it from moving. Then, use a stencil brush to tamp the colors onto the cabinets. Stencils are also good to use to add color or design to an existing cabinet. This is beneficial if you like the current color of your cabinets or just want to add additional decorative elements that match your bathroom's theme.
