Paint Color Ideas With Black & Green Drapes

A large pair of green and black drapes over a window creates a focal point for the room. The colors of the drapes should fit into the decorating scheme, including those painted on the walls. Even if you are painting, you do not have to have solid-colored walls. Different painting techniques can add texture to a wall while incorporating more colors, such as those of your drapes, into the design.
  1. Chair Rail and Trim

    • Paint walls green to match the green of the drapes, but install a chair rail around the room at waist height and paint it black. The baseboard and crown molding in the room should also be painted black to match the chair rail. Use a semigloss paint for the black trim and green walls to make cleaning easier and to add a slight shine to the walls.

    Sponge Painting

    • To incorporate both green and black into your painted walls, use a sponge or rag painting technique. Paint the background of the walls green to match the drapes. Pat black paint onto the dried green walls with a bunched rag or natural sponge. The black will contrast with the green without overwhelming the color of the walls, and the two paint colors will match the drapes. Paint with a flat or matte finish in dark colors such as black and green will make the room seem drab, but semigloss paint will lighten the room because the walls will reflect a small amount of light from the lighting fixtures.

    Accent Wall

    • Use the drapes as the accent wall for your room. Paint the wall around the drapes the same shade of green as the drapes, but use a neutral color for the remaining walls. Gray matches the dark tones in the green and black drapes, but cream-colored walls act as a contrast to the drapes and brighten the room overall. If you are using a neutral color for the walls that does not contain black or green, place accessories such as throw pillows and end tables in black and green on the side of the room opposite the drapes to tie the black and green drapes to the rest of the room's decor.

    Patterns

    • If the drapes are solid in color, paint a pattern on the walls to create visual interest. Paint boxes on the walls in various shades of green to create a plaid effect, or outline green or white boxes with black or green paint to give the illusion of trim-lined paneling on the walls. Stripes in black, green and white reduce the darkening effect of only a black and green color scheme, and the stripes can make the room appear taller or wider. Vertical stripes at height and horizontal stripes will make a narrow room look wider.
