Painting Non-Vinyl Particle Board Cabinets

Particle board is made of compressed wood chips and sawdust that are glued together. This material is often used to make inexpensive furniture and cabinets, but it needs some kind of laminate cover over it in order for it to be of any use. If you want to paint your particle board cabinets, you have to sand down the laminate to make a rough surface for the paint to hold onto. It doesn’t matter if the laminate isn’t vinyl; you still have to sand it down.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the hinges from the particle board cabinets with a screwdriver then pull off all of the hardware.

    • 2

Place a drop cloth over the area in the room that will not be painted.

    • 3

Squirt three to five drops of liquid dish washing soap onto a sponge and wet it to create suds. Clean the cabinets with the sponge. Rinse the cabinets with water and let them air-dry.

    • 4

Sand the particle board cabinets with 150-grit sandpaper until the laminate has a rough, dull surface. Be careful not to sand through the laminate.

    • 5

Spray primer onto the cabinets and doors to coat them completely. Let the primer dry for up to 24 hours.

    • 6

Paint the particle board cabinets with latex paint. Coat the inside and outside of the cabinets with paint applied with a roller. Use the roller on the front and back of the cabinet doors. Use a paintbrush for the sides and any hard to reach places on the cabinet. Allow the paint to dry for 12 hours before applying a second coat.
