Painting Rooms to Give a Larger Effect

If you find yourself having fits of claustrophobia in your living space, a fresh coat of paint might be all you need to make your home or apartment more livable. Combine a paint job with other strategic decorating options to optimize the amount of space in your rooms. De-clutter your space with organizational fixtures like bookshelves, dressers and decorative space-savers to eliminate excess stuff while also enhancing the room's appearance. New light fixtures can also go a long way in giving your room a more spacious effect.

Choose light colors, which make spaces seem larger. However, keep in mind that white isn't your only option. Other cool colors that increase appearance of space include light blue, light brown and light green. Select one paint for the primary color of your room, as well as a secondary color that complements the primary selection. Use the secondary color for decorations like lamps, rugs and furniture.

Create a focal point in the room, and paint a more dramatic color around it to emphasize the chosen object. This technique draws attention away from the minimal space in the room while also featuring a fireplace, antique chest or other focal point. It's also a good way to use a darker color that you might be attracted to, such as dark red or brown.

Take advantage of ceiling space. Use silver paint on ceilings to reflect light and make the ceiling seem higher. You can also make the ceiling seem higher by painting it a lighter color than the rest of the walls.

    • 4

Paint the baseboards or crown molding the same color as the wall. Using identical colors for the baseboards and crown molding gives the illusion of more wall space.

    • 5

Use alternating colors for long, narrow rooms or hallways. Paint the longer walls a lighter color, and use a coordinating darker color for the shorter walls.
