How to Paint a Stomped Ceiling With a Sprayer

Since ceilings have a lot of imperfections in them contractors often times texture them to hide these imperfections from view. Stomped ceilings are created with round, carwash brushes that are pressed into the ceiling. Once textured, your ceiling is harder to paint over in the traditional manner because of all the ridges. However, paint sprayers can be used to apply an even coat of paint to the stomped ceiling in your home.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the furniture and cover the floor with a drop cloth. Tape newspaper to the area below the ceiling to prevent drips.

    • 2

Vacuum the ceiling to remove any dust and dirt from the surface. Put on your coveralls, goggles, face mask and hat to protect yourself from paint splatters.

    • 3

Pour the paint into the bucket and thin it with 1 cup of water for every gallon of paint.
Pour the thinned paint into the paint sprayer. Adjust the pressure on the spray so the paint comes out in a fine, even mist.

Hold the paint sprayer 12 inches from the stomped ceiling and move your arm back and forth as you press down on the sprayer. Keep moving your arm every time you press the sprayer or the paint will be uneven. Avoid tilting your wrist as you move the sprayer so you can get an even layer of paint on the stomped ceiling. As you spray, overlap each newly painted area with the area you just painted for an even coat of paint.

Allow the paint to dry for 24 to 48 hours. Apply a second layer of paint in the same manner as the first.
