How to Paint Your Own Rubberwood Furniture

Grown in South America and Southeast Asia, the rubber tree produces liquid sap that is used to produce latex and rubber. People mainly use it for this purpose until the tree is about 30 years of age, when it produces less sap. At this point, the wood may be harvested for fuel or lumber. Rubberwood furniture has straight grains and a fine texture. You can easily paint your own rubberwood furniture using common painting techniques.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any old paint from the rubberwood furniture. Direct a heat gun to the surfaces of the furniture or apply a chemical paint remover. Use a rubber scraper to remove the paint after it comes loose from the furniture surface.

    • 2

Sand all the surfaces of the rubberwood furniture with fine sandpaper between 220 and 400 grit. Lightly rub the rubberwood, following the wood grain to prevent any damage on the wood.

    • 3

Dampen a piece of cloth with water and wipe down the rubberwood furniture to remove any sanding dust that could interfere with a smooth paint application.

    • 4

Apply a knotting solution to the areas of the rubberwood furniture with knots and resins. This solution seals the rubberwood and helps make the paint job last longer.

    • 5

Brush on a wood primer all over the surface of the rubberwood furniture. Primer will help paint stick better to the furniture.

    • 6

Apply a thin coat of melamine, polyurethane (PU) or wood paint to the rubberwood furniture with a paintbrush. You may have to apply more than one coat to get the color you want.
