How to Fix Paint on a Rough Wall

Rough walls can leave your paint application looking uneven. Though paint colors the walls, it doesn't hide imperfections like rough patches or an abundance of texture. To fix the paint job on a rough wall, you’ll have to fix the wall first by sanding it down. Sanding removes the roughness and evens out the wall. Once the sanding is done, you can take care of the paint.

  • 180-grit sandpaper
  • Sander

Instructions

    • 1

Move the furniture away from the walls and place a dropcloth on the floor. Put on your face mask to cover your nose and mouth and open as many windows as possible.

    • 2

Insert the sandpaper into the sander. Using a belt sander is easier and will give you more control. Sand the rough spots in the wall until they are gone. Use a brush to remove the dust.

    • 3

Apply a thin layer of painter’s caulk over the wall and smooth it out with the trowel for an even surface.

    • 4

Tape off the ceiling, baseboard and any other trim. Remove outlet covers and switch plates.

    • 5

Paint over the wall with the rollers and paintbrushes. Cut in the edges of the wall and ceiling with the brush tilted at an angle to create a 2- to 3-inch wide border. Apply the paint in 3-foot squares with the rollers for an even coat. Allow the paint to dry at least 24 hours.
