How to Paint Over Semi-Gloss Paint on Furniture

Covering a piece of furniture with semi-gloss paint doesn’t just change the color. It adds a sheen, as well. As with any other paint, you can easily modify the look of your semi-gloss-covered piece by redoing it in another color and finish. To ensure that your second coat adheres to your furniture and to avoid chipping and paint bubbling, you must first prepare the surface to accept your new paint.

Instructions

Sand the piece. Using 220-grit sandpaper, go over the entire surface, removing any loose pieces of paint. This will also add texture to your previously smooth surface so that it will accept the new paint. Go over the piece with a tack cloth upon finishing your sanding to remove the sanding dust.

Apply a layer of primer. Select a primer intended for use on wood, and apply it, working with the grain of the wood. Apply an even layer, as this will act as the base for your new paint. Allow the primer to dry completely before you continue. Overnight is a good idea.

Apply two coats of the top paint you have selected. Paint the entire piece once, and then go over it again after allowing 10 and 12 hours for the first coat to dry.

Finish with a clear top coat for maximum durability. Apply a layer of polyurethane to the entire piece after your two coats of paint have completely dried. While this final layer isn’t absolutely requisite, taking the time to polyurethane the piece preserves your work and reduces the likelihood of chipping and cracking.
