How to Paint Plaster Walls in a Clothes Cupboard

Painting plaster walls is no different from painting any other wall surface; the same basic tools are required and the same technique is used. Closets are easy to paint once shelves are removed. You can paint your closet a standard white, or you can paint it the same color as the room. If most of your clothes are dark, choose a lighter color to make clothes easier to see; likewise, if your clothes are mostly light, choose a darker color.

Things You'll Need

  • Drop cloth
  • Interior latex paint in the color of your choice

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the clothes rod and any shelves. Lay the shelves on a plastic drop cloth.

    • 2

Pour an inch of paint into the roller pan. Be sure to put the paint can on a drop cloth or section of newspaper to protect your surfaces from drips.

    • 3

Paint the top side of the shelves. Use the paintbrush for the sides and the roller for the shelf's surface.

    • 4

Cut in the corners of your closet. Start at the ceiling of the closet and apply paint to the corners and the 2 inches of wall on either side of the corner.

    • 5

Paint the walls. Use the roller to fill in the area between the corners.

    • 6

Check to see if your shelves are dry. If so, turn them over and paint the underside using the same technique as in Step 2.

    • 7

Apply the second coat of paint to the closet as before; paint the corners first using the paintbrush, and then the area between the corners using the roller.

    • 8

Turn the shelves over and apply a second coat of paint to the first side. Let it dry to the touch, then turn it over again and apply the second coat to the underside.

    • 9

Replace the shelves in the closet when dry. Be careful not to scuff the closet walls as you reinstall them. Replace the clothes rod.

    • 10

Let your closet dry for 24 hours before hanging up your clothes and placing items on the shelves.
