How to Use Exterior Oil Base Paint For Door Crack Repair

Exterior doors get cracks from the weather when they expand and contract due to heat and cold. This happens most often if the door is older. While you can’t use only paint to repair the crack in a door, you can paint over the repair to make it less noticeable to others. Wood filler will fill in the cracks in your door and leave a smooth finish to paint over. Oil-based exterior paints take longer to dry than water-based paints, however.

Instructions

    • 1

Sand the grit from the door with 150-grit sandpaper. Use an orbital sander to remove the paint without cutting gouges in the door.

    • 2

Dampen a cloth and wipe down the door to remove the dust.

    • 3

Apply wood filler to the crack. Smooth the filler into the crack with a trowel until the crack is filled in. Smooth the wood filler over the door until it’s flush with the door. Sand over the wood filler until it’s smooth.

Paint the door with the oil-based exterior paint. Paint the door panels and the corners of the panels. Paint around the door panels. Allow the door to dry for six to eight hours.
