How to Antique Textured Walls

An Old-World look on a wall can add instant charm and drama. This technique can be achieved quite easily. You'll need a textured wall to begin this project as the glaze effect will only work on walls with raised and lowered areas. Once you have your wall textured and ready to go, this antique effect can be applied in just a few hours -- completely transforming your wall!

Instructions

    • 1

Protect your work area. The flooring underneath the wall will need to be covered with drop cloths. Tape these into place with painter's tape on the woodwork to keep them from pulling away from the wall. Remove any nearby furniture to avoid getting glaze or paint on it.

    • 2

Mix the glaze. The glaze should be mixed with the same paint that you painted the wall with at a level of four parts glaze to one part paint. Mix this in a small bucket or bowl, depending on the size of the job.

    • 3

Roll the glaze onto a small section of the wall. Work only on sections that are sized about 4 feet-by-4 feet. Take your roller, load it with glaze and make one pass on the diagonal, going from left to right. Reverse and make another pass going right to left. This creates a crosshatch pattern.

Let this set. Wait at least five minutes. If you want a deeper contrast between the textured areas and the rest of the wall, wait seven to 10 minutes.

    • 5

Wipe the textured areas with a damp sponge. Place a flat sponge in some water and wring it out thoroughly. Sponge over the raised areas on the wall. Keep the sponge flat and use a wiping motion. Do the edges first, as these dry faster. Wring out the sponge as needed.

Finish the wall. Repeat this process in a new area, working until the entire wall has been finished.
