How to Glue a Stone Veneer to a Wall

Stone veneer tiles are made out of thin sections of stone. When affixed to a home's wall, these veneer tiles make the wall look as if it is constructed of stone. Stone veneer walls are a common way to add property value, depth and texture to a home. Installing so many irregular stone pieces may seem like a daunting job. But a little forethought, planning and careful attention to the veneer glue's instructions will easily allow you to accomplish a professional-looking veneer job.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the surface of the wall with a scrub brush, bucket and pH-neutral cleaner diluted with water according to the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 2

Allow the wall's surface to dry overnight.

    • 3

Measure out a rectangle on the ground that is the length and width of the wall on which you intend to install the stone veneer. Lay the stone veneer in the rectangle as you would on the wall for an easily alterable preview. If dictated by the stone veneer manufacturer, leave a space between neighboring stones for grout lines roughly equal to the manufacturer's specifications (don't bother getting out a ruler just yet). Play around with the layout. For a professional look, put tiles with different shades, sizes and textures next to one another.

    • 4

Wipe the underside of the first veneer stone with a damp sponge to wipe off any dust or debris.

    • 5

Spread the mortar glue on the back side of the stone veneer with a notched trowel. Follow the label's instructions for mortar and ridge depth.

    • 6

Place the stone veneer in the corner of the wall. Press the stone into place using medium pressure. Wiggle the stone back and forth gently as you press. Keep pressing until a bit of mortar squeezes out on all four edges. Use a level to make sure that the stone veneer is level.

    • 7

Hold a chalk line across the top of the stone veneer from one end of the wall to the other. Snap the chalk line to make a level line and rough guide by which to lay subsequent stone veneer.

    • 8

Lay neighboring stone veneer in a row following steps four through six. Check each stone veneer with a level to make sure it is straight. If dictated by the stone veneer manufacturer, leave a space between neighboring stones measured with a ruler to meet the stone veneer manufacturer's specifications for grout lines.

    • 9

Cut stone veneer pieces down to size, as necessary, with a rotary saw and diamond tip blade. Measure twice before cutting once. For irregular cuts, use tile nippers.

    • 10

Install the rest of the rows of tile, following steps four through nine. Remember to use a level to make sure that the first stone you apply in every row is level.

    • 11

Allow the glue to cure for the manufacturer-recommended amount of time before attempting to install grout (if necessary).
