How to Decorate a Zebra Wall

Whether you're a zebra enthusiast or just like the high contrasts and eye-catching patterns of animal prints, a zebra-themed wall is sure to add visual impact to your room. If you're especially ambitious, you can even paint your own zebra-print wall hangings. When painting a zebra-print pattern the main challenge is to give the pattern of zebra stripes a realistic balance of uniformity and variation. Check out nature magazines for inspiration and guidance before you start laying out your own pattern.

Instructions

    • 1

Hammer nails into the wall to hang framed zebra artwork or use removable poster hangers, available at most office supply stores, to hang posters of zebras on the wall.

    • 2

Hang zebra-print curtains over any windows on the wall. If there are no windows on the wall you are decorating, hammer nails into the wall and drape zebra-print curtains over them to create a canopy-like hanging.

    • 3

Create your own rigid zebra-print wall hangings by painting zebra stripes onto narrow canvas rectangles a few feet tall. Start by painting each primed, prestretched canvas with one or two solid coats of white and allow it to dry thoroughly.

Deviations in the pattern will make it look realistic.

Draw pencil lines on each canvas to indicate the centers of the black stripes, starting from the center of the canvas and working outward. Space the lines about 4 inches apart, or twice as far apart as the desired stripe width. Make the first line slightly curved or wavy, and have each line roughly match its neighbor, with slight deviations in the curvature or pattern. Stop some lines partway down the wall and allow others to merge with a neighbor to form a Y shape.

Either black or white stripes may end partway along the pattern.

Paint a black stripe about 2 inches wide along each pencil mark, bringing stripes that end partway across the canvas to a slightly rounded point. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly.

Hang the canvases to create a zebra-stripe accent that covers a large portion of the wall. One attractive approach is a diagonal arrangement, with each canvas oriented vertically but hung a few inches lower than the canvas beside it.
