How to Outgas Powder Paint

Outgassing powder paint involves releasing the air trapped in a painted object while curing the piece. Trapped air is present due to the porous nature of an object’s surface. When you cover the pores with paint, the air becomes trapped beneath the powder. During the curing process, the heat used causes this air to escape, creating bubbles in the powder surface as the powder gels over the piece. Outgassing the object successfully prevents this bubbling, giving you a smooth painted finish without the unattractive bulges that results from the escaping gases.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on the dry-off oven for your painted object to a temperature setting of 450 degrees Fahrenheit, and then set the curing oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Allow 10 minutes for the oven to reach the set temperature.

    • 2

Put on a pair of heat-resistant work gloves. Place the piece into the oven for 10 minutes to allow the trapped gases in the pores of the piece to heat sufficiently enough to escape from the object.

    • 3

Pull the piece from the oven using a pair of tongs and immediately apply the powder paint to the object by quickly passing the object through the paint. Move the object to the curing oven and cure the piece at 350 degrees Fahrenheit until the paint gels onto the surface.
