How to Ombre the Walls

An ombre wall starts out one color and slowly gradates into another color. When done well, the effect is gradual and the boundaries between colors are not obvious. The more colors you mix between the two main colors, the more gradual the change will be. You can choose two similar colors for a subtle effect or two drastically different colors for a more dramatic effect. Paint horizontal strips of color with the darker color on the top, working down to the lighter color, for a sunrise look.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint the entire wall with one coat of the lighter color of paint using the paint roller. Let the paint dry and clean out the paint tray.

    • 2

Measure the height of the wall and divide it into nine equal sections. Mark the sections lightly with pencil. These will be your guides as you paint.

    • 3

Paint the top strip, marked off in Step 2, with the darker paint, using the paint brush. Dip the brush directly into the paint can and use the edge of the can to remove excess paint before applying the paint to the wall. The brush should be almost dry to get a light feathered look with a little of the lighter paint showing through. Clean the brush.

    • 4

Pour four disposable cups full of each color of paint into the 5-gallon bucket and mix it with a paint stick. Pour the paint into the paint tray.

    • 5

Paint the center strip of wall with the color you mixed in Step 4. Use the paint brush as you did in Step 3.

    • 6

Add one disposable cup full of the darker paint to the paint tray and mix it with the previous paint with a paint stick. Then paint the strip above the center strip with this new color using the paint brush.

    • 7

Repeat Step 6 two more times to cover the rest of the wall from the center to the ceiling.

    • 8

Clean out the paint tray and clean the brush. Then mix another batch of paint as in Step 4. Pour the paint into the paint tray.

    • 9

Add one disposable cup full of the lighter paint. Mix it well with a paint stick. Paint the strip below the center strip with the paint from Step 8.

    • 10

Repeat Step 9 two more times. Leave the bottom strip of wall the solid lighter color.
